As long as you're only doing anonymous CVS, you can just use
cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/gnome login
<give empty password>
cvs -z 3 -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/gnome checkout dia
