Hi

I'm interested in using Dia, but as someone relatively new to Linux, I'm
having a bit of difficulty gluing all the bits together (and that's even
before I launch the program!). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm using SuSE 6.3, and the libxml and libxmld (the developer package)
versions with it are 1.7.3. When I run configure on Dia, it says that
libxml must be at least v1.8.5. I therefore downloaded libxml v1.8.6 from
Gnome, and compiled it.

It has installed itself into /usr/local/lib, whereas SuSE put the v1.7.3
into /usr/lib. I therefore tried changing the symbolic links in /usr/lib
for libxml.so and libxml.so.1 to point to the new v1.8.6 in /usr/local/lib,
but doing configure on Dia still produces the same message that libxml must
be at least v1.8.5.

Should I uninstall v1.7.3 completely? Should I reinstall v1.8.6, but force
it to go into /usr/lib? And if so, how do I do that? And what about
libxmld - I cannot find that anywhere on the Gnome site, but presumably it
will be needed to compile Dia? Does anyone know its whereabouts? I am
assuming I need v1.8.6 of it as well - is that correct?

Yes, I suppose I should just try all these things and see what happens, but
I've spent 3 hours on this so far, and work beckons, so any pointers would
be welcome.

Can I suggest that it might be a good idea to hold copies of the latest
sources of these required packages on the Dia site? This would mean that
everything could be downloaded in one go, rather than have to go wandering
about looking for things. If there is a problem with webspace or anything,
I would be very happy to offer space at www.linuxwales.com, which is a
practical-type thing we are putting together (it's just in draft form at the
minute!) to tell people how they can load Linux, and use a variety of
specific programs with it. Once (if!) I get Dia running, that will be going
on there as a how-to.

Best wishes, and thanks,
