First of all, is there any particular reason not to install gnome-libs?
It doesn't mean you have to use all the other gnome stuff.

If you really really want libart without gnome-libs, download the latest
gnome-libs and run configure, make and make install from thje libart_lgpl
directory.  That will skip the rest of gnome-libs.
