I was having the identical problem, but figured it out - do NOT use libxml2-2.0.0!
Use libxml-1.8.7 instead.
(and if you have already used libxml2-2.0.0, you will find returning to 1.8.7 will
not be entirely trivial, but not that hard either ;-) (I suppose that if nobody
else is working on making dia work with 2.0.0 I'll start looking at it sometime soon
unless someone tells me not to...)
