There is your problem.  I believe libxml2 is a very different and probably
totally incompatible beast than libxml.  Get a version >= 1.8.5 of libxml
and try again.

Remember also to install libxml-devel, which is needed for compilation.  If
you only have libxml-1.8.x, you can only use a precompiled version (RPM).
