The Citizendium Project
http://citizendium.org/

"We would like to clarify a claim that has appeared in the press recently.
The Citizendium will be launching a private "alpha" (aka, to non-geeks,
"beta") project this week. While people are welcome to apply for an
invitation to participate in this project, as either author, editor,
and/or constable (see below for clarification), the pilot project will not
be open to general public view. That's mostly because we can't handle the
added bandwidth (Web traffic) yet. Please note that all participants will
be expected to endorse our Statement of Fundamental Policies."

Introduction

"The Citizendium (sit-ih-ZEN-dee-um), a "citizens' compendium of
everything," will be an experimental new wiki project that combines public
participation with gentle expert guidance. It will begin life as a
"progressive fork" of Wikipedia. But we expect it to take on a life of
its own and, perhaps, to become the flagship of a new set of
responsibly-managed free knowledge projects. We will avoid calling it an
"encyclopedia," because there will probably always be articles in the
resource that have not been vouched for in any sense.

We believe a fork is necessary, and justified, both to allow regular
people a place to work under the direction of experts, and in which
personal accountability--including the use of real names--is expected. In
short, we want to create a responsible community and a good global
citizen.

To learn more, read an introductory essay, "Toward a New Compendium of
Knowledge," read our Statement of Fundamental Policies, or see the FAQ
below.

While waiting for the wiki to be set up, what can the ordinary
rank-and-file future authors or editors do? Four things: first, decide
whether you would like to participate in the pilot project; second, join
the project forums or a project mailing list (the list called
Citizendium-L at least); third, contribute your thoughts to the
discussion; and, fourth, wait for the announcement that the public wiki is
ready to edit."

Contact the Project

How do I contact Citizendium staff?

If your mail does not require a reply, please say so up front, so that we
can read it, appreciate it, file it (or forward it), and move on to the
next one. We love notes of encouragement, but we also love it when you
say we don't have to reply!

Please send your mail to the right address:

If you want to reach Citizendium leadership, or offer kudos, advice, or
cautions, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] Larry Sanger and an expanding
group of associates will be answering your e-mail.
You can contact Larry directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you are writing to offer your services, please send your mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and in your mail title, please specify what you
are interested in doing or taking charge of. (Here is a list of
possibilities.) You should be aware that in these early weeks we don't
have money to pay anyone (just as you would expect from a
by-our-bootstraps operation). But we do have a huge need for all kinds of
help.

Also, if you want a donation, there's a place to comment when you make
your donation.

Bear in mind that these mailboxes may be quite full, and we may not be
able to answer right away!

Sincerely,
David Dillard
