Dear Colleagues: Authors Needed for Cultural Dimensions of Information Practice Do we need for a book for ALL librarians--not just those working in consumer health or even medical libraries--that addresses being a knowledge worker in an increasingly diverse world? For instance, STM librarians (scientific, technical, and medical) are working not just with consumers from all cultural backgrounds, but also with researchers, computer scientists, and health practitioners from around the globe. How does this affect how information is transferred and disseminated? Are there cultural dimensions to information dissemination? For librarians working in any setting, what must be considered when library-related teams become international in their membership and scope? How does a public library, which is often funded significantly with government dollars, deal with material selection and purchase of religious or ethnic or culturally relevant materials? How does someone working in cataloging and classification address subject headings of potential cultural bias or address cultural terms and norms not already available for indexing? These are just a few of the topics that could be addressed in such a work. We would love to know what else you think should be included or what issues you have faced. A few of us in the Medical Library Association (MLA) are considering preparing a proposal to the MLA Books Panel for this type of book, but the consensus is that we can't do it alone. We are looking for potential authors and perhaps even some people interested in editorial work or other roles. If you are interested, please let me know your area of interest/expertise as it relates to this project. We would appreciate an initial response by February 28. Thank you for your consideration.
