Yes, Phil. It is the people in the list who make it what it is. And as you say, experience counts. Indeed more than knowledge obtained from reading books and attending (even the best) universities. But for occasional display of one-up-manship, the DDN list s doing very well. Unfortunately, for some of us working in field-work-based projects, there are too many mails to cope with!

Subject: [DDN] distinguished educators keep pouring in to DDN

hi DDN community -

when the DDN web site launched a few months ago i was struck by the
quality of the people showing up. new york city teacher ted
nellen, for instance, has twice been named teacher of the year in the
new york city public schools.
http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/tnellen

last week i met DDN member sheila gatling, also from new york, who
struck me as being cut from the same cloth as ted.

of her own accord she set up 9 linux computers in her middle
school classroom and uses the free, open source Moodle software to
enrich her students' learning. (http://www.moodle.org)

she is an expert at training Moodle instructors and designing
Moodle courses. she'll be presenting at the MoodleMoot NE
conference in massachusetts, in june, 2005.

oh, and by the way, in 1987 she co-authored a 322-page book,
The Black College Guide, a resource guide for students on 84
historically black colleges and universities, with accompanying
software. and she has a leadership role in new york state
united teachers, where she served as chair of the task force on
civil and human rights.

i'm looking forward to learning from sheila gatling, ted
nellen and others of you in the coming months. with that kind
of background, whatever sheila or ted says is something i'm
going to listen to very carefully. by virtue of the work
they've already done, their words carry great weight in these
quarters.

              - phil
