After a storm like Hurricane Katrina, it may be the only way to communicate. In many cases the phone lines are out, so people turn to their cell phones, but as more people dial up the networks can clog up and make it difficult to get through. That's when text messaging comes in handy Kennedy is a sales manager at US Cellular in Wilmington. She says you don't have to wait for the network to free up to send a text message. They go through quickly. "What it is, is text messaging goes through on a different level of cell phones towers, and it's able to send short message to make sure everyone is okay." Most cell phones are capable of text messaging, but it's mainly the younger generation using them. "Teenagers use it all the time. It's their main form of communication. Everyone else can do the same thing in a time of a true emergency," says Kennedy. Kennedy says virtually every cell phone company offers text messaging. With the hurricane season just reaching its peak, that's certain to reassure many more people caught in a storm.
