Technologies for Communication UNESCO Stand at the World Summit on Information Society November 18th, 11H30 – 13H30 Kram PalEXPO, Tunis
On November 18th two events will take place within UNESCO stand (http://portal.unesco.org/ci/en/ev.php-URL_ID=20506&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html) at the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis - the presentation of the manual “ICT for journalists in the Maghreb” and a presentation of innovative software solutions to foster freedom of expression. The events are open to the public and participation is welcomed for journalists, media professionals and anybody interested in information and communication technologies. * ICT for journalists in the Maghreb The role of Information and Communication Technologies for journalists has been investigated and discussed in a workshop in November 2004 in Marrakech, Morocco. Almost twenty journalists from the five countries of the Maghreb have participated in the workshop and contributed to the discussion. The results of such work have been resumed in a publication that will be presented at the WSIS in Tunis. The publication offers a diagnosis of the current utilisation of ICT by information professionals in the Maghreb, at all levels of the information production chain: from access to sources to the archiving of information through validation and sharing. This manual aims at being a reference guide for professionals, providing a rich collection of resources and online references. The manual will be presented and distributed at UNESCO's stand on November 18th. The two authors will be present, as well as representatives from UNESCO and ISESCO, the two partner institutions that have equally contributed to the realisation of this manual. * ICT solutions for freedom of expression New communication models have recently emerged as a result of the development of new communication technologies. Pear-to-pear knowledge sharing and collaborative knowledge building have already affirmed themselves as extraordinary tools of communication. Two innovative experiences related to two corresponding software tools, will be presented at UNESCO's stand in Tunis: P2P television, a pilot project that, thanks to the flexibility of the P2P sharing model, allows the creation of a totally free and customizable TV, and a collaborative groupware tool that allows the collaboration and coordination among geographically distributed and multi-language groups. * Programme 1.
