FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Revised Teachers' Guide to International Collaboration on the Internet
Now Available to Educators

Washington, DC, November 14 - "It is … very important to teach
students about the world beyond their own countries. What are the
similarities we share and differences with our friends around the
world? We must understand what motivates those whose cultures and
traditions are not our own. To achieve these goals, we must teach our
children international education skills, which include the learning
of other languages, cultures, and traditions." This statement by U.S.
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings is the vision behind the
launch of International Education Week this week.

One of the key tools available to educators who would like to
internationalize their classrooms is the newly revised "Teachers
Guide to International Collaboration on the Internet."
(www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tech/international/ ), which is now
available on the Department of Education's website. The Teachers'
Guide was written and revised by a team assembled by iEARN-USA.

Secretary Spellings points out, "We are constantly reminded that we
live in a borderless world in an age where information and news are
available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The world is
indeed interconnected, and what happens in any one country can be
instantly transmitted worldwide."

The new "Teachers' Guide" provides tutorials, tips, on-line and print
resources, as well as specific curriculum-based projects in which
U.S. teachers can participate to establish school-to-school global
interaction on the Internet. Examples are provided across the
entire curriculum, from science and creative arts projects to
interaction in World Languages.

After participating in one of the World Language projects in the
Guide, Kathy Garner, a teacher in North Carolina, notes, "My French 3
students communicated with schools in Lebanon and the Democratic
Republic of Congo, and it only took a few messages for my students to
value the lesson. They really enjoyed sending digital pictures and
receiving pictures as well. My students learned so much French, but
also they learned about other teens in the world by discussing a
topic of mutual interest, music. I hope to continue this year so that
my students can learn about things that I can't teach or they can't
read in a book, cultural understanding. Thank you for providing a
forum for students of the world."

iEARN-USA Director Dr. Edwin Gragert, points out "Through the
Internet, students and teachers have the opportunity to go beyond
international simulations and engage directly with students in other
countries. Students have the opportunity to both learn and teach
through direct interaction, enabling them to gain knowledge about and
the ability to work with other cultures. These are important 21st
century skills. The Teachers Guide provided by the Department of
Education helps educators equip students with these skills."

iEARN-USA (International Education and Resource Network) has
pioneered online collaborative education among countries of the world
since 1988 for the purpose of enhancing learning and connecting youth
to make a difference in the world. iEARN is currently active in
schools and youth organizations in 115 countries. iEARN works
internationally with many partners to expand access by US classes to
the world's students and teachers.
