I use 0.seconds for such oneshot receive attempts. Snippet:

    while (!halt) {
        if (++readCounter > messageCheckFrequency) {
            receiveTimeout(0.seconds,
                &_verbose.fun,
                &_quiet.fun,
                &_unknown.fun
            );

            readCounter = 0;
        }

        slice = conn.stream.readLine(buf);
        // ...
    }
