How many terms are needed? Of the ordinals {first, previous, current,
next, last}, however they are named, are any not needed? Are any more
needed? randomth? nth?

Current and curr have been suggested. I was only looking at two terms
for now, i.e. the front and back position in the range. "next" and
"empty" remained less controversial and I was happy to reduce the scope
of the vote.
