Whatever empty() does, it must be called against an already-allocated
reference to an Array.


Phew... That seems quite acceptable. For a moment, when I read your original words: "- Containers must be dynamically allocated to do anything - even calling empty requires allocation. " it almost reads as you saying that any and each call to empty requires an allocation... :S
