Well, the one I downloaded a couple of days ago is a .so, and I'm not linking to that anyway, but to libodbc.so (part of unixODBC). The FreeTDS lib must be dynamically loaded by unixODBC, so given that the two are like hand in glove, it's difficult to see how they would change it to a .a.
