Not only programs, but hardware too....I built a modem
with 2000-2200 Hz tones that worked very well on
packet with bpqax25.

If the shift is right, you only need to rock the dial
knob (or push your buttons..) until the tones your
equipment uses are well tuned.

Rocking the dial corrects the differences, but it may
not alter the shift....that is, with SSB ham radios.
