Mel, One final thought -- if you already own or can inexpensively obtain a Windows operating system (or are happy using Linux), one approach to getting a desktop PC is to buy a new 'bare bones' unit such as this one at Fry's: http://www.netaffilia.com/ad/electronics/frys/i/2005/08/19/11973.html - - and just perform a fresh install of the OS. For $180, you're getting a PC that -- while very much on the 'low end' of the spectrum, and realistically needing memory and possibly power supply updates in the future -- costs little more than many of the used PCs you see out there for almost as much.
