Subject: [digitalradio] Digital Modes Success On 160 Meters

If you want to have consistent successful digital mode contacts of any reasonable distance you have to run a full size antenna, either a 1/2 wave dipole or 1/4 wave vertical. Night time D layer absorption on 160 meters is very unforgiving when using an 80 meter G5RV into a tuner or 80 meter doublet shorted together into a tee vertical. You also have to run more power than the customary 25-30 watts, with 75-100 watts pretty much a requirement.

With an 80 meter dipole and 25 watts you can expect to make contacts out to approximately 100 miles. A full size dipole and 75-100 watts will allow contacts of up to approximately 500 miles. A one wavelength loop and 75-100 watts will allow for contacts of up to 1500 miles. a 1/4 wave vertical with 64 1/4 wave radials and 75-100 watts will get you into the 2000-4000 miles range.

It's just the nature of the beast.
