In the early days of HF digital, we used external hardware to encode and decode the data.
Later we used a combination of hardware and computer software. Even later (today?) we used software only and have relied on the internal parts of a computer to encode and decode out data. Some have said that they no longer wish to run data modes that require external hardware does this mean using NO peripherals? I have a friend you has purchased a very small computer. The 15" LCD screen (with speakers) and keyboard are larger than the computer. However, the hard drive in the computer is only large enough to hold the operating system and a small amount of E-Mail. Since my friend wants to listen to music he downloads and store lots of E-Mail, he has added two external hard drives and a floppy drive. Since the speakers in the monitor are "too small", he has added two large speakers and a sub-woofer. He also likes to print out his pictures from his digital camera so he has added a expensive color printer/scanner unit. But he wanted a small computer...and he got one. I would like everything in a box...I used to have one...a tower case with a P-I motherboard, Hard drive, floppy, CD, data card and 70cm transmitter all in the tower case. I finally was in position to obtain an HF transceiver to put in one of the empty hard drive slots when they stopped making it. And also I remembered that it only ran one watt so needed an amplifier...and even then I would also need an external power supply and antenna tuner. My point is that while it is desirable to try and get everything for our amateur radio in a single box, it probably will not be possible. My main concerns is that anything external to the computer be COTS and opernsource and something that the internal "workings" of the computer cannot do or cannot efficiently do.
