All, Meteor Scatter 'season' seems to be off to a good start. Meteors are constantly bombarding the atmosphere and there is an increase in activity in the spring and summer as the earth orbits into the more densly populated areas of space debris left behind by comets.
The tiny particles (some not so tiny) create ionized trails as they enter the atmosphere and it is this ionization that reflects radio waves. The 6 meter band is well suited for meteor scatter; 100 watts and a small Yagi will do nicely. Joe Taylor's JT6M and FSK441 digital modes were specifically developed for meteor scatter. Most meteor trail reflections last a fraction of a second and it is the fast data transfer of the modes that make it possible to decode these short bursts. The meeting place for meteor scatter enthusiasts is Ping Jockey Central. Skeds are made there and the group is always looking for new blood. Andy has provided a link on his sked page.
