Andy,

The "standard" mode setting is long-interleave so no need to change it. The 
only thing I can think of is the software squelch; it may have been set too 
high. You can leave it open for the weak signals or set it until the garbled 
characters stop. 

MT63 is fairly sensitive and it will decode signals that are just audible. Wish 
we were further apart for 20 meters. I need to get something in the air for 80.
