This position has a blend of responsibilities across technologies including local and wide area networks, high availability (clustering and data replication), server farms using Unix/Linux operating systems, and storage area networks. Provides identification/fixing of problems within existing systems, design/implementation of new systems, and enhancement of existing systems. Participates in analysis, design, and new construction of next-generation IT systems. Is responsible for understanding the needs of customers, the realities of commercially available IT products, and the creation of requirements that will allow implementation by the development team. Experience as a systems engineer on one or more IT platforms is preferred. Must have solid technical background with a focus on IT systems. Skill areas include telecommunications (e.g., TCP/IP and OIS/CMIP/X25), operating systems (e.g., Windows, NT, and UNIX), database/DBMS (e.g., ORACLE, Access, and Sybase), and applications (e.g., Tivoli, Peoplesoft, etc.) is required. Familiarity with ITIL and SEI/CMM is desirable. Responsible for the identification/resolution of problems within existing systems, design/implementation of new systems, and enhancement of existing systems. Supports the customer's emphasis on application availability, including day-to-day operations and hot-site disaster recovery operations. Architecture consists of a mix of Sun T5120, M3000, M5000 servers and 7310 storage array, Hitachi USP-VM SANs, Dell 1750 Windows servers, Dell 1950 Windows servers, Cisco 6509 switches and load balancers, Cisco 525 PIX firewalls, Brocade 5100 and 7500 fiber channel switches, and Sun StorEdge SL500 tape system. More specifically, this position is responsible for: - Monitors network hardware operations to ensure properly set configuration options. Plans implementation of enhancements and upgrades to the network; performs cost/benefit studies of network configurations and recommends enhancements; installs and tests network hardware; advises management of hardware requirements, configurations, and limitations; and isolates, resolves, or circumvents network problems. - Installing, administering, and troubleshooting various networking gear including switches, routers, load balancers, firewalls, and communication lines such as Cisco Catalyst 6500 series using Supervisor 720, Cisco ACE load balancer modules, and Cisco FWSM Firewall Blades. - Performing hardware, firmware, operating system, and software deployments, upgrades, and patches in a complex 24/7 operational environment. - Manage external connections to multiple sites from third party data providers. - Working with vendors and consultants. - Documenting system configurations and standard procedures. - Reporting on the system health and capability. - Executing disaster recovery operations, participating in security assessments, and remediating vulnerabilities. - Providing expertise in advanced maintenance techniques and failover plans. Additional responsibilities as required. *Required Education, Skills and Experience:* - Bachelor's degree or higher and 7 years of relevant experience are required; the degree requirement may be substituted with an additional 4 years of experience. - 5+ years of experience in network administration including experience with switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and intrusion detection systems. - Working knowledge of Sun hardware assembly and integration. - Understanding of clustering, backup, and automation techniques. - Understanding of storage area networking concepts. - Working knowledge of IT security components, including hardware and software solutions; understanding of PKI. - Ability to make operationally critical decisions within a multi-site operational system. - Ability to manage individual projects from inception to implementation. - Ability to mentor other team members. - Must be a team player (team oriented) and willing to follow directions, as well as take initiative. - Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. - 24x7 environment; after-hours on-call rotation is required. The candidate must be able to attain and retain a Transportation Security Administration Public Trust credential.
