I was so busy thinking of opacity and things that I didn't think that it might be the colour key value. D'oh! I like this /etc/directfbrc file! I'll have a look into adding the hardware decoding then. Hey - based on your advice so far it looks like I'll just have to add 'decoding=hw' into the magical /etc/directfb file and it will work - no more effort required :-) Ahhh. Life is good - I've just been out for a meal, and I've come back and have an alpha blended on screen display.
