Hi,
as you know, the Debian Installer team is really interested in using
DFB for the graphical frontend of the installer. Tests have been run
by a few people, and it seems DFB is ready for what we need. IIRC, one of the main problems with releasing a new official version, was the fact that gtk+ 2.8 was not ready yet.
Summer has now gone and gtk+ got to 2.8; a few days ago there was an
irc meeting where we discussed about short/long term plans for the
installer and people showed a growing interest toward the graphical
fe. I wonder if you guys have a plan for a future release of
gdk-directfb which would make life easier for people in charge o packaging
libraries needed by the installer.

Thanx a lot in advance,
Davide

The main point is that, as Davide suggested, even if the graphical d-i runs fine on GTK 2.0.9.5, this version is very outdated. We should be able to ship netinst CDROMs including GTK 2.8 instead of 2.0: your help is really needed in creating an usable graphical d-i.
If you want to give it a quick try (i386 only), download and burn

https://debian.polito.it/downloads/debian-testing-i386-20050918-GTK-netinst.iso

and at the boot prompt just press "enter".

ciao
