Oops, it should be even 2.9.5 compatible, if possible, but at least 3.0.
OK, just now some of the configure.in tests fail as CFLAGS has
-Wno-strict-aliasing enabled.
I wondered why I didn't add that flag already when I was adding
it some days ago. Seems there has been a good reason :)
It should be added nearly at the bottom of configure.in if the
compiler supports it.
