Oh, this was a loong time ago. Had almost completely forgot that patch :-)
Your comments on probing/config port is highly relevant. My 2 cents is that a 
config system would be ideal, or maybe "misuse" the config from elsewhere.

I applied your patch with the driver disabled by default.
