No effect at all? Still goes black and you don't see the video or the graphics? Strange. Without --no-hwosd, df_xine will try to use the graphics layer for itself, changing its pixel format and putting the video layer underneath. I could see why that would cause you problems. Also, by the look of it, regardless of --no-hwosd, df_xine sets DLSCL_EXCLUSIVE on the primary layer and sets its background colour to black. When you used your patch, what were you setting the level to? '1' presumably, since I don't think your patch caters for either -1 or 0! But 1 should be the default anyway unless anyone changes it...
