I tried three different files, all which play back fine in X with smpeg.

Actually, it was sitting right in front of me and I missed it completely.
Right on the web page for the 0.9.10 release it says that XDirectFB will
be ready in the next few days, and I completely overlooked that.  

Thanks for the info about CVS.  If I get impatient (and I always do), I'll
try pulling XDirectFB from CVS this afternoon and giving it a shot.
