that's a wrong assumption. DirectFB has a full windowing system and
GTK+-DirectFB makes use of it. It should be possible to port a simple
X11 window manager to DirectFB.  That would however force you to use
the multi-application core which is still a bit experimental.

I haven't tried running GTK+-DirectFB applications in XDirectFB yet.
That could indeed solve the problem (but should definitely be
considered overkill).
