You can use XDirectFB and other DirectFB applications on the first head
and mplayer on the second head. I'm using XDirectFB as the master with
dfbterm, df_cpuload and gnome-session in my ".xsession". This way I simply
start up DirectFB via startx ;) I can read mails in the dfbterm before
Gnome even displays its splash screen ;)

You shouldn't use /dev/fb1, the second head is handled by DirectFB completely.

I guess this is fixed via automatic triple buffering in the latest versions.
