If u add line like append="video=matrox:vesa:0x115", u should compile the kernel with matrox support as "y". I think u would have configured it as module. If u configured it as module then u should insmod or modprobe. The option "y" is meant for monolithic kernel, only then adding line in lilo.conf will take effect. otherwise wont. so check it out.
