You don't have to change the kernel sources if you grab fusion from cvs.

What exactly crashes? A hw specific fbdev driver or even vesafb?

You could try a recent 2.6-mm kernel. In my experience mm tree usually has 
a more stable framebuffer system.

Indeed. Anonymous cvs gives me a connection refused error while 
developer access works.
