Thanks for the help Claudio. I have tried these things and this is what happens.
I start XDirectFB and it displays on both "heads". Gnome starts as normal everything is fine ( but on both heads monitor and TV). Next I start vdr with softdevice plugin (using -vo dfb:mga_tv). VDR displays the output on the TV as expected but also overlays the computer monitor and it goes completely grey. I can no longer access XDirectFB ( the process is still happily running though in the background). If I stop VDR I get my XDirectFB desktop back on the computer monitor. I have tried playing with matroxset to limit active "heads" but with no luck. I am missing something fundamental here - does anyone have tips as to what I should be looking at or tools I can use to investigate further what is going on? Thanks again for all the help.
