An ImageProvider may be created to take data from a databuffer and provide it to a graphic surface.
But what else might be the purpose of a DataBuffer within DirectFB, than to contain pixel map data? I can imagine that a DataBuffer might contain instructions for drawing to a graphic surface, but I don't see any defined way for such instructions to be formatted. I'd value advice.
