Hi!

To give you my take on your Qs:

1. DirectFB is a lot of fun!
2. DirectFB seems to be very active - most of the traffic is on the
directfb-devel list

3. X11 Desktop
IMHO you cannot yet substitute DirectFB for X11 - there simply aren't enough
apps, the window management is not as good, etc...
However, you can run X11 *on top* of DirectFB (XDirectFB) - this gives you the
best of both worlds - X11 support, ability to run normal apps, and directfb
apps as well.

4. Performance
Would I recommend doing this? Well, I think it is worth playing with, and
DirectFB is (IMHO) a very good platform for embedded devices. If you leave off
X11 the memory footprint is lower, and DirectFB gives you a lot of powerful
support for making media apps under linux.
Another cool reason to run XDirectFB/DirectFB was true transparency - since
DirectFB uses dedicated buffers for each window, real transparency effects are
possible. With the introduction of XGL, AiXGL, Beryl, Compiz etc... to X11 this
is now also possible under X.
2D performance can be excellent, depending on your HW, but there is little 3D
support - and you can't make use of the proprietary NVIDIA / ATI drivers for 3D
effects. So it really depends on your application whether DirectFB is faster
than X11 or not....

That's my 2c,

Richie
