Unfortunately, changing the line "mode=1024x768" to "mode=640x480" in 
/etc/directfbrc does not have any effect even after the reboot.
And I don't have any other file named "directfbrc" that could overwrite the 
setting.
The DirectFB screen is always fullscreen and though it's internal resolution is 
1024x768 it is stretched to 1920x1080 of my LCD monitor.
Is there any other option?
