You can think of an IDirectFBSurface as an “off-screen” surface and a 
IDirectFBDisplayLayer as an “on-screen” surface wrapper.

As for your second question, creating a Surface as Primary is the same thing as 
getting the Primary Display Layer and calling GetSurface().
