I've upgraded rsync:

# rsync --version
rsync version 2.6.9 protocol version 29

But it fails anyway:

dirvish foo:default error (23) -- partial transfer
dirvish error: branch /backup/foo:default image 20070219-1031 failed

# more rsync_error

*** Execution cycle 0 ***

rsync: recv_generator: mkdir "/backup/foo/20070219-1031/tree/Im\#341genes
Trip Aplica JPG" failed: Invalid argument (22)
*** Skipping everything below this failed directory ***
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1385)
[generator=2.6.9]

But now it seems that the special character have been replaced with a code.

That's a fairly old version of rsync. The first thing I would try is
upgrading it. It's probably also worth searching the rsync site for
unicode info.
