Administrivia for the web site:

About a week back, the wiki was hit by quite a few vandalism attacks,
from two different sets of code. I locked it down write-only while I
considered options, for dirvish and the other sites I maintain.

I offer the group a choice of two options:

1) Keep the current Perl-based Kwiki software, add a "captcha" for
attempted writes. Captcha is the little graphics box that contains some
distorted letters, which a normal-vision human can read but most bots
cannot. This is less work, but troublesome for visually impaired people.

2) Change to MediaWiki. This is more work - I will probably have to
write a script to reformat the markup pages. I will also have to
enable modphp on my server. But MediaWiki is well supported, and many
people know how to use it. MediaWiki comes with many tools for login
and authentication. Unlike Kwiki, I expect it to last a long time.

Both options, sadly, add work and reduce our privacy. But until
someone finds the vandals and stops them from attacking wikis, we are
forced to defend the pages against bots; either passwords or captchas
or other annoyances. Please email me directly with your opinions.

Note there are plenty of other wiki options; most involve a language
change. If I am making changes, I will change to a well known option,
and MediaWiki is the best known. Hence the two options, please don't
argue for a third.
