I'm running SlackWare 10.0 on the backup server. I don't have the
flexibility to rebuild it until I finish a couple of other projects.

What are you using on the backup server?

Most common PC OSs get binaries for Schily's tools. Debian definitely does -
http://packages.debian.org/etch/star - so there's something for Linux.
There always used to be binaries for Solaris on SFW, and maybe Blastwave
just as well.

There should be no need for compiling yourself, or it should at least be
assisted (ports collection &c).

Yours, Bernd
