Are you still using rsync versions < 3.0.0 ? Newer versions do "incremental transfers", meaning that it's not necessary for rsync to traverse the complete tree before beginning the transfer; it's now done per directory. Of course, if all your files are in one directory then it doesn't give any improvement...
