This was my first thought too. You are right, it's in a USB stand.

Well, I switched it on and typed mount /dev/sdg1 /mnt. It took about 20 
seconds or so to mount, working on it all the time, which is quite 
unusual. But  it was mounted eventually, and it has run fine for some 
time now. I have tried to change a .conf file and save it, no problem, 
so no read-write errors.

The (hardware) clock that starts the stand is set correctly.

So nothing to see except the long mount time. Any ideas what else I 
could do to find anything? Maybe fschck helps. I have started it right 
after beginning to type this mail, and it's still finding lost Inodes...
