Looks like it's picking up bad (old) definitions of
PKG_CHECK_MODULES and AM_PATH_CPPUNIT.  I'm not sure why it's not
using our (working!) definition of AM_PATH_CPPUNIT contained in
config/cppunit.m4 

What version of autoconf and automake are you using?
