Clark -- I use a heat gun for this kind of rework. If you haven't seen one, it's essentially a 500degree hair dryer. If the board allows, you can reflow the whole thing on a hot plate (don't flinch when you pull the board off!)

I finally got my 44MHz oscillator in. Tried to remove the existing
oscillator but I got nowhere with my iron and copper braid. Can anyone
suggest a cheap tool that will allow me to get this surface mount oscillator
up?
