Given your stated level of experience with GNU Radio and Linux, I
recommend that you *not* install some downloaded archive.  Instead
install the pre-built packages and dependencies supplied by your Linux
distribution:

http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/InstallingGR

or play around with the bootable Live DVD:
