After almost a year I finally finished editing the recordings from
last
years GNUstep developers room.
At first I wanted to upload the videos to some video portal
(youtube, vimeo
or something else) myself. Then I realized that youtube is not an
option
since it limits the length of uploaded video to 10 minutes for
average users
(there are longer videos on youtube - I just don't how they did
this). And
vimeo is also not an option: here a file size limit kicks in, you
get only
500MB per week as a free user - this is less than the size of a
single video
I've got.
Fortunately the FOSDEM people offered help here (thanks go
especially to
Christophe Vandeplas). They have a youtube account where they will
upload my
videos. The videos will also be available at video.fosdem.org
My problem now is:
How do I get those files to the FOSDEM people in a timely manner
(e.g.
asap). FOSDEM doesn't have machines that support ftp. They prefer to
download it themselves from some ftp or http site.
Does GNUstep maintain a ftp site where I can put the videos just
for the
download by the FOSDEM people (after the videos are downloaded
they can be
removed again)?
I've got 10 videos, about 40 to 60 minutes each. That results in
file sizes
ranging from 670MB to 1,39GB (all videos together amount to 9,04GB
and are
in H.264 format in a .mov container).
Maybe if you generate smaller resolution videos ?
That would be difficult. The quality of the source material is very
poor (changing exposure and white balance, oversaturated colors, low
audio level, noisy) so it doesn't compress very good. I tried my very
best to improve the quality at least a bit (this is part of the
reason the editing took so long) and if I increase the compression
the already visible artifacts would become really disturbing.
The poor quality of my footage is the reason why I asked if somebody
can bring a dedicated DV-Cam with FireWire cable to FOSDEM. The
digital pocket camera I used last year is not very well suited for
such a task.
Then you could
upload them on vimeo (that's what I did for the etoile hackathon
--http://vimeo.com/user1762980/videos).

Thanks,

p.s.: Meanwhile Christophe Vandeplas of FOSDEM provided me with some
of his private ftp space and I already have started uploading the
videos. Many thanks to him!
