Without doing "what the customer wants" you can simply forget doing Kickstarters. And nobody said it has to be a short term goal. Imagine $500'000; you could pay 3 developers 2 years full time. Enough for a moonshot? Several 3D printer designs reached such numbers with just a fancy, half baked idea. The group of possible users is pretty small, for sure not in the millions. And nobody in the crowdfunding world puts a dime on things like "quality" or "GNUstep-first".
