for US go to http://www.uspto.gov
Then do a trademark search - free
Trademark application is an online process $350
takes about 9 months to actually hear a response if
your application succeeded or if you need to provide something
else to obtain Trademark.
I have read lots of Wipo disputes and paid special attention
to Trademarks - since we have a client whose domain was
hijacked (NSI cashed the check for domain renewal on 2/28 AND
expired the domain on 3/15 !!!) the domain is my client's company name but
my client does NOT have a trade mark.
I am not a lawyer but from reading domain dispute cases, it appears that to
successfully protect your domain, you should
have a Trademark - so invest in the application if no Trademark exists!
Cheers
