Robert,

By the sounds of it, you slept through the last release on Feb 26th, I hope
you had a good flight ;)

Judging by Ken's announcement, they are doing pretty much the same type of
release for this one as well. At this time VeriSign is still using RACE but
not the same flavour as they started with in November. The same goes for
name prep as well.

In the last release you where able to use the RWI bulk loader for single
entries, yes. I trust nothing has changed in the iteration. As for
resolution...it goes way beyond we resellers. Instead VeriSign is using
every person registering these names as guinea pigs, as well as affecting
Registrar market share by introducing an unstable element into this
business. (unfairly IMHO)

Personally I strongly believe in the Idea of ML names but I have real issues
with VeriSign "fast tracking" the work being done by the IETF working group
on internationalized domains and charging people full price to participate
in this "Public Preview Program" (gee I wonder where they learnt that trick
from....MS maybe! ;)

To add fuel to the fire, a company (Walid) this week announced that it was
awarded a patent based on the work that is currently being done by the IETF
(http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/03/27/patents.slow.IETF.idg/index.htm
l) This story is a little off from the standpoint that it implies the IETF
may has to pay for something...which is ridiculous due to the fact that they
(the IETF) do not profit from ML names. In reality VeriSign might have to
ante up <g>.. I'm keeping my eye on this issue as it may prove mighty
interesting.

Further more, I have a feeling that we will see resolution this year.
VeriSign might have to pull a trick out of New.net's hat and create a
browser plug-in if they really have too. One way or another these names will
resolve in their native format. Remember that over 900,000 ML names have
been registered collectively by all registrars participating in VeriSign's
testbed. They have to make this work eventually other wise 900,000 people
make a pretty big lynch mob ;)

Hat's off to Tucows though for staying the course and keeping up with the
IETF's attempted standards track and not using company's such a i-DNS or
Walid and their proprietary solutions. (Dare I say I had a hand in that
during my tenure at Tucows ;)

Cheers,

James

Subject: Maybe I'm just thick... re the latest Reseller Update

pardon....?

Multilingual names
snip.....

It's Friday - this must be Rome. Obviously I slept through the entire
flight!

I can see that it looks like there will be extra language capability built
in .. somewhere. Is this part of the RACE thing? yes/no? maybe. Will we be
able to actually use it for single (bulk entry?) registrations, and lastly
of course - _when_ will such names actually resolve in their native format -
is there a time line for this or are the reseller again acting as guinea
pigs?
