Looking at our management interface, I see we already specify the format
+1.4165551122x1234 for all domains.

I just changed our registration interface to behave the same way.

For us, we find that our customers prefer consistency.  We get many more
questions about "why do I have to format my phone number differently for
different domains" than "why do I have to format my phone number that
way".
